How to fix a water-damaged phone

Help! You accidentally dropped your phone in the toilet. Your clumsy friend knocks a glass of water onto it or you forgot it was in your pocket when you jumped into the pool. If you’ve not yet been a victim of one of these disastrous incidents, you can count yourself lucky. For most people, their phone has met with water at some point and it brings on pure dread.

First things first, don’t let the panic take hold! Follow these steps to avoid having to replace your phone.

What to do?

Step 1: Quickly grab your phone when it comes into contact with water and quickly switch it off. Dry the exterior of the phone with a cloth or paper towel.

Step 2: For a final drying, use the vacuum cleaner to suction off any remaining droplets. Be careful to not shake the phone around.

Step 3: Place the phone in an airtight bag filled with dry, uncooked rice. Rice has an amazing ability to absorb moisture. But you’ll have to leave it untouched for two to three days.

Step 4: You might have collected silica gel packs – those little white packets found in the boxes of new shoes or electronics – which can also be used in the same way as rice. If you’re accident prone or live in a very humid environment, these are a good thing to have around.

Step 5: After a couple of days have passed, take the phone out of the bag, plug it in and switch it on. You’ll soon know what the outcome is.

What not to do?

Don’t turn on the phone and put it on charge to check if it’s working.

Don’t shake or blow on the phone, as, you could push the water in further.

Don’t think about using a hairdryer, as any kind of heat will have harmful effects on your phone.
