How to do summer right – on a budget!

The days are longer, the evenings are warmer, and it’s getting a lot easier to get out of bed in the mornings. It’s clear that summer is here! And with it comes the urge to throw on a t‐shirt, shorts, and flip flops and head outside for some serious fun in the sun.

Summer in South Africa is always very exciting, offering festivals, sunset concerts, outdoor cinemas, beer gardens and sidewalk cafes in abundance, which are all enjoyed at a price. Never mind the additional cost of Christmas presents and various festive season celebrations. It’s fun to say yes to everything, but living outside of your means can catch up to you very quickly – even if it’s just for a few weeks.

With all that in mind, is it possible to have heaps of fun on a budget? Yes, if you really put your mind to it. Instead of saying ‘sign me up’ to everything on offer, think about what you can spare financially each month and set yourself a challenge to plan for as much as you can within that budget. Being at home doesn’t have to be boring here’s how to do summer right, on a budget.

Have fun outdoors

Have a garden? Make this space a haven for outdoor activities. Check out sales at nurseries for flowers and water‐wise succulents, and pick up some affordable pots for further water‐wise planting. You’ll have this beautiful space to enjoy for much longer than just this summer.

You can re-vamp your outdoor area and add some comfortable new patio furniture to enjoy more time outdoors this summer whether you’re entertaining or just spending days in the sun relaxing.

You can also throw down some blankets and invite your friends over for a picnic, all you need is a few snacks and some ice cold drinks. A gas braai and an ice maker will be a great add and make it easier to entertain this summer.

Keep it cool

All you need is a blender for homemade smoothies, slushies or cheeky cocktails. Make sure your home is cool with an air-con for all the hot days you’ll spend lazing around catching up on all your favourite TV shows.

Capture it all

The best thing about the summer holidays is definitely all the memories you’ll be creating with friends and family. Whether it’s a digital camera or your cellphone make sure your camera is top notch to capture all the moments.
